After a frustrating first two weeks of the 2021 tennis season that saw Valley post a 1-3 record, the Vikings needed only 6 hours to turn their season around as they won the Wabash Invitational on Saturday. The Vikings defeated Taylor (5-0), Wabash (4-1) and Whitko (3-2) to win the title.
Hannah Parson, Valley’s number 1 singles player picked up 3 big wins; Valley’s number 2 singles player, Gigi Engstrand chalked up 3 wins as well, winning two of her matches in dramatic tiebreakers after trailing by a set. Viking number 3 singles player, Peyton Oldham added two big wins for the Vikings and continues to improve her play.
On the doubles side, the number 1 team of Kailin Neese and Mackenzie Costello easily won their matches against Taylor and Whitko, contributing 2 huge points.
The Valley number 2 doubles team featured both Bri Feldman/ Kaydence Shepherd and Jada Hicks/Andie Sweneger.
Feldman/Shepherd lost another heartbreaker 4-6, 5-7 to Abby Arter and Morgan Dyer of Whitko, while Andie Sweneger and Jada Hicks made their first varsity start and won 6-0, 6-1 against Alexa Johnson/ Maddie Von Uhl from Wabash.
The clinching point was provided by Engstrand as she battled back after a first set defeat from Anna Arter of Whitko 1-6. With all eyes on Engstrand and Arter, Engstrand roared back winning the second set 6-2 and then took the 10 point super tiebreaker (10-4) to secure the title for Valley.
Valley now sits at 4-3 on the season as they get 1 day of rest as they ready themselves for the next 11 days and 8 matches during that time span.
